The fully staged, complete children’s opera Wind, Rain & Tail welcomes schoolchildren and families at its premiere Friday, May 29. After some preview performances of the opera’s musical selections for early audiences, the entire experience is ready for prime time.
Wind, Rain & Tail tells the story of Eeyore’s lost tail and how his friends Winnie-the-Pooh, Tigger and Piglet help him find it. The work, written and composed by UNCW Music Department faculty member Bettsy Curtis, is based on A.A. Milne’s story, “Eeyore loses a tail.”
Performing are the members of Opera Wilmington’s Opera Out & About Quartet: Emma Fields, soprano; Ella Shynett, mezzo-soprano; Johnny Nichols, tenor; and Kai Williams, baritone. Curtis directs the accompaniment.
There’s a free morning performance of the 45-minute work for kindergarten students at several New Hanover County schools. A 3:00 p.m. performance – also free of charge – is designed for children and adults. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Both performances are in Beckwith Recital Hall, located in UNCW’s Cultural Arts Building, 5270 Randall Drive.
