The Metropolitan Opera has chosen what is perhaps Giuseppe Verdi’s grandest work for its first Live in HD screening in 2025, and we want to tell you all about it! Join UNCW opera historian Dr. Helena Kopchick Spencer to learn everything you wanted to know about Aida on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Opera Talks is a partnership between Opera Wilmington and OLLI, and is open to everyone.
A galaxy of outstanding sopranos have sung the role of Aida, which became a role in which singers of color could distinguish themselves. Among these legendary sopranos was Wilmington’s own Caterina Jarboro, who was the first American female singer of color to play a leading role (Aida) with a white opera company. The Met’s new production features Angel Blue, whom critics have called one of the most influential sopranos of our day.
The Live in HD screening takes place Saturday, July 25, with an encore screening Wednesday, Jan. 29. Both take place at Mayfaire’s Regal Cinemas. Opera Talks tickets are $10 each. Click here to reserve your seat!
