The week of June 22, a group of rising fourth- through eighth-graders spent the week in UNCW’s theater space, immersed in all the aspects of producing an opera.
As part of our annual Opera Camp, the participants worked with set designer Max Lydy, costume director Mark Sorensen, and Opera Wilmington artistic director Nancy King to build their skills and to experience the thrill of being part of a big artistic project. They are now experts on this summer’s two works: Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. They even met the two composers – at least in cardboard form (can you identify Puccini and Mascagni in the above image?)
The campers will sing with the Cavalleria ensemble at all four performances later this month.
