In addition to Opera Wilmington’s summer fully staged opera production, we host concerts and pop-up singing events. In partnership with UNCW’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, we offer select Metropolitan Opera Live in HD screenings in the acoustically terrific Beckwith Recital Hall on campus. Beckwith is located in UNCW’s Cultural Arts Building, with adjacent parking.
Where Do We Host Events?
Performances of arias and scenes throughout the year take place at various venues, including local churches and restaurants and the intimate and acoustically excellent Beckwith Recital Hall at UNCW’s Cultural Arts Building.
We’ve performed at the New Hanover County Arboretum twice! We’ve taken our show on the road to Sunset Beach!
Outreach concerts can be arranged at schools, community centers, and private homes.

Opera and the Church: A Community Conversation

Some of the most transcendent sacred music of all time was composed not for the church, but rather for the opera house! Opera Wilmington’s upcoming double-bill of Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana features several sublime musical prayers.
How did the composers portray Catholic faith and culture in these two operas?
Join us for Tuesday’s Community Conversation, intended for Catholics and non-Catholics interested in deepening their understanding of the operas’ Catholic themes. The event includes:
- A short presentation by Dr. Helena Kopchick Spencer (Associate Professor of Music History, UNCW) on the Catholic music in Suor Angelica and Cavalleria rusticana.
- A panel discussion of Catholic imagery and theology in these two operas with the Very Reverend Jairo A. Maldonado Pacheco (Pastor and Rector, the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary), Alex Hill (Director of Music and Liturgy, The Basilica Shrine of St. Mary), and Dr. Nancy King, (Artistic Director, Opera Wilmington), facilitated by Dr. Spencer.

Mixologist Sinjun Chapman at Caprice Bistro imagined what Suor Angelica might concoct from the convent herb garden she tends. Chapman also tried to channel the passion and anger of Turiddu, a soldier returning to his Sicilian village to find his fiancée married to another man.
The result? Chapman created two special cocktails: Angelica’s Garden and The Duel. You can order them daily through July 26, the date of Opera Wilmington’s final performance of Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana.

“Sip your way into the story before the curtain rises — then catch Suor Angelica and Cavalleria rusticana live July 17, 19, 24 & 26 at Opera Wilmington,” Chapman says.
Angelica’s Garden is a gentle mix of rosemary simple syrup, lemon gin, chamomile tea, green chartreuse, a drop of honey and a sprig of rosemary.
The Duel is a passionate Sicilian combination of demerara sugar simple syrup, whisky, cherry juice, Peychaud’s bitters with a Malbec wine float.
